Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in times of the Ukraine war

CSR got a huge topic for businesses in the recent years. This means that a lot of companies started to not just care about their profit maximization and advantages but also about having a positive impact on the society. Both in social and environmental ways. In the horrible times of Russia´s invasion of the Ukraine a lot of companies worldwide got political active and started to help the victims through their economic influence.

Big technology players like Google and Microsoft for example abandoned media of the Russian state from their platforms. Elon Musk, head of SpaceX space company, even provided the ukrainian government with internet of his company´s satellite. Furthermore, some telecommunication businesses provided free calling minutes for all mobile phone users in the Ukraine, among others the software company Viber. As these examples show, many companies embrace the human responsibility of their organization and take a stand to help the victims of war. Especially in these tough times, it shows what great impact and importance Corporate Social Responsibility has.

  1. In my opinion, the post rightly praised the enterprises that are taking the initiative here, but did not go into what a complex decision this represents for companies active on the Russian market. They have to ask themselves if they will take any action against Russia, with what objective and how they would do it. Also, they have to consider what the consequences are of their active involvement or of their passive non-involvement. Participation in the sanctions is a way of showing support for Ukraine. While strengthening relations with the countries that have imposed sanctions themselves, the relationship with Russia is being destroyed in the medium if not long term.
Can companies remain neutral in this conflict or do they have a moral or social obligation to join the sanctions? In my opinion yes, they do have a responsibility. The Ukraine war shows that when entering new markets or relocating production, or when making investments, companies must remember that being active in a country nowadays is associated with agreeing to that country's politics. Therefore companies should have plans on how to react when that country breaks international agreements and starts a conflict.
