Work family-life conciliation and the positive impact on companies

Work-life balance is an important matter for the quality of work and for the administration. Family remains the first buffer and drain of problems in our society, concerning relevant interests of each family member.

Following the withdrawal of the Maternity Leave Directive, the Commission decided to take a broader approach in addressing women's underrepresentation in the labour market.

The European commission initiatives set out a comprehensive package of complementary legal and policy measures, which are mutually reinforcing. Such as: Reduced working hours, flexible working hours and flexibility in place of work to all working parents of children up to at least 8 years old. Ensuring protection against discrimination and dismissal for parents, including pregnant women and workers coming back from a leave.

The benefits from applying these EU initiatives regarding work-life balance not only have an impact on employees, but also will benefit the company itself.

Companies and managers will have in return an increased commitment.
Studies show that employees with children appear to show near total commitment to employers that make an effort to help them reconcile their work and family responsibilities, compared with childless workers, whose commitment averages 85 percent.
