Managing differently with the example of Patagonia

Image
Some companies are moving away from traditional management and hierarchies to more participative and relaxed models where all employees are considered as collaborators with common values. Flexible working hours, childcare facilities, recycling policies and a percentage of turnover donated to NGOs are new arguments that are becoming more and more widespread.  Patagonia company is a perfect example and is described as a responsible, liberated, ecological company - in short, a corporate citizen. Patagonia is a company that exploits the concept of clean sport with environmentally friendly and original products. Its success stems from its commitment to the preservation of diversity. It is with a strong involvement with its employees and a lot of trust that the company has built its management. Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia's founder, explains that he uses a management by absence approach to encourage this. It pushes each employee to grow and find a sport, or other activity, that suits them....

Nightmares after two years @ home

Image
Before Covid, I had my life sorted out. But then the pandemic hit and I was sent home to work remotely, just like millions of other employees worldwide, and the situation changed entirely. Studies conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) showed that in the first year of the pandemic, the part of employees being affected by depression and anxiety rose by a massive 25%. Social isolation and financial worries were among the main causes   (cf. WHO Scientific Brief on March 2 nd , 2022), and I think most of us can confirm. Finally, I worked out some ways to deal with my increased stress that I would like to share with you in this blog. Staying productive is my Nr.1 recommendation:  When work is cancelled, you need to find something challenging that gives you the feeling of achieving something, like painting in my case. Secondly, I recommend you not to change your habits too much. Keeping a healthy sleep rhythm and a healthy diet increase the level of serotonin in your brain...

Emotional Intelligence from the point of view of Banco Santander

Image
Emotional intelligence (E.I.) is something that nowadays is on everyone's lips , especially when we talk about global firms. In fact, a recent study made from the University of Málaga showed us that E.I. can develop the relationship between the firm and its clients, as it can develop teamwork between members and the capacity to lead a whole team too. In September 2009, Emilio Botín, the previous C.E.O. of Banco Santander (the biggest bank in Spain), said “if you do not trust yourself and your own capacities, you will not be able to reach your own goals neither the goal of the company”. These are principles and values that Banco Santander has applied since its first beggining in 1860. As presented in the article “ La inteligencia emocional mejora el trabajo en equipo ” published on 20.09.2009 by Carmen Sanchez-Silva in the newspaper El País , the emotions play a significant role in the business. The logic is not the only reliable information. The emotions influence our deci...

The perfect recipe for efficient group decision-making

Image
Source: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2022/mar/20/you-can-have-fun-and-experiment-inside-the-test-kitchens-where-restaurants-cook-up-new-dishes  First of all, you only need a few ingredients, a maximum of five people. They should have diversified taste for a better complementarity of abilities. A good combination of ingredients will lead to a better result than individual choices. One or two of them should be spicy, give them the role of devil’s advocate in order to counter harmful team consensus. In a mixing bowl cream together equal speaking-times and anonymous opinion collection. Then, add a tablespoon of safe space to speak up, so that everybody feels comfortable to express their ideas and to avoid missing important information. After that, fold in a collective responsibility for the outcome, so that everybody is included in the group’s decision making process. To finish, add a pinch of confidence in the person who has expertise in a specific area and top the whole thing wit...

Fiji's Greenwashing

Image
Greenwashing As we were talking about corporate social responsibilities we also came across the responsibility to act environmentally friendly as a company. Big brands realized that customers value the carbon footprint of the products they buy. Consequently they started advertising with their products to be eco friendly to attract customers.  But to say your product is environmentally friendly is one thing but to actually produce your products with reduced or even no emissions or using less plastic is another. Due to companies branding their products eco-friendly, nevertheless they are not, the term 'greenwashing' occurred. A good example is 'Fiji Water' which claims to be even carbon negative and being 'pure nature' to justify that they are charging double the price as their competitors. Fact is that the company itself states that they will not be carbon neutral before 2037. Moreover their water is taken from a Fijian aquifier and bottled in plastic bottles f...

Nonverbal communication in the business world

Image
From: https://www.verywellmind.com/types-of-nonverbal-communication-2795397  Only 30% of our communication is conveyed orally through language. While it is important to express yourself well and according to the context, non-verbal communication also plays a big role. This is equally true for the business world.  Non-verbal communication affects the success of a presentation, a conversation with a customer, or a job interview. For a manager, it is essential to present oneself well in the above-mentioned situations. This includes an appropriate outfit, good posture, eye contact and a charismatic appearance. But non-verbal communication also includes gestures which can be used to underline or emphasize the message of one's words. When dealing with customers, non-verbal communication helps you to understand the signals your counterpart is sending. Accordingly, you can adjust your speaking pace, volume and posture to engage with your conversation partner. A third major form ...
